Safety Precautions at the Gas Pump

When it comes to staying aware of your surroundings, it is important to apply practical techniques at all times to ensure safety. There are different locations that people naturally let their defenses down and consequently become more susceptible to attacks. The gas station is one of those interesting places were people turn into gazelles at waterholes. People get so focused and concentrated on "filling up," that they turn their back to the world and lose sight of what is happening around them. Take it from us, if you stare at the dollar signs adding up - the price will not get any cheaper. And if you turn your attention away from your gas tank - it will not overflow! "There is no reason you can't insert the nozzle, start the gasoline flow and then turn your back to the vehicle. This, at once, covers your back and leaves you facing the potential danger zone with much more opportunity to see an approaching attack" (2014 Buyer's Guide Handguns).

Along with keeping your eyes on the danger zone, it is essential that you have your gun-hand free and ready to access your firearm. You never want to be in a situation were you are unable to defend yourself, if needed. So let your gas tank fill up automatically, keep your eyes pealed and keep your gun-hand available!

Women Firearm Owners on the Rise

23 percent of the customers who have gravitated to retail firearm and ammo shops in recent years are women.  This is up from 13 percent in 2005, according to recent Gallup poll data.  The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), reported in their January info-graphic that of the twenty-one million established target shooters, women comprised 30 percent.

Firearm Safety Organizations

USA Today reported that along with the rise in both female firearm ownership and target shooters, comes a growing number of women taking classes on firearm safety and self-defense.  A nationwide organization called The Well Armed Woman caters to women by introducing them to target practice and personal self-defense.  The organization’s motto is, “where feminine and firearms meet.”

As part of the National Rifle Association of America (NRA), the Women on Target® is another organization that caters to female firearm owners.  The organization provides instructional shooting clinics that are primarily focused on teaching the importance of firearm safety and confidence when shooting.

Firearm Industry and Women

The women’s market is very real, and is poised for rapid growth with plenty of manufactures making products specifically aimed at women.  Products options include aesthetically pleasing colors, smaller sizes and elements to reduce fatigue.  There are pink ammo rifles, pink shotguns and more.  Purses with holsters have also been specifically designed for women with conceal-carry permits.

Smith & Wesson, was the first manufacture to recognize the potential for the women’s market, and today offers many different firearms for the women owner including revolvers and rifles.  One such model is the Smith& Wesson M442 Airweight Revolver (#150469).  This model features a unique Scandium Alloy high-strength frame, which allows for the lightest revolver capable of greater recoil and performance.

However, the industry is not stopping there.  Proper fitting clothing, accessories and even bedazzled hats are also being manufactured from hunting apparel companies.  While these products - firearms and apparel - may not have been seen in past generations over even a few years ago, manufactures (as mentioned) are definitely now embracing female owners.

Why Own a Firearm?

The vast majority of women firearm owners say that having a gun in their possession – whether on their body or close by – makes them feel safer.  Other specific reasons for their owning a firearm includes:
  • ·        Protection
  • ·        Gun Control
  • ·        Economy
  • ·        Independence
  • ·        Hunting
  • ·        Target/Sport Shooting

Where To Put Your Gun Safe

Whether you consider yourself a hunter or simply a gun enthusiast if you own a gun, or several guns, it is important to have a gun safe to keep your guns in.  There are many reasons to own a gun safe and the most important is safety.  Since gun safes are mainly used for security and safety it is important to have your gun safe placed in a correct area of your home.

The size of your safe will determine the range of places you can put it.  The larger the safe the more difficult it becomes in putting the safe in a basement or attic.  Also, many safes have unique doors that only open to a certain degree.  You must keep this in mind when placing your gun safe in your home.

Advice that is second to none when placing your gun safe is keeping it out of your children's reach.  Even though it is a safe, you want to keep your safe in a place where kids don't have access to it.  There are too many accidents involving children and guns to take chances when placing your gun safe.

A gun safe can be used to store more than just guns so usually your bedroom is a good place for a safe, depending on what you are storing inside.  Also keep in mind that it is smart to place your safe away from windows so that your house does not become a target.

There are many factors to be considered when placing your gun safe but none are more important than safety.  Be sure to keep your safe somewhere that will keep you and your family the most safe and secure.
